Professor Vormwald received a diploma of the Technische Universität of Darmstadt (TUDa) in civil engineering. He also earned his doctorate at the TUDa with a thesis on crack initiation life prediction for variable amplitude loading. He then worked until 1993 as a test engineer and project manager at the Industrieanlagen-Betriebsgesellschaft, Ottobrunn, where he gained practical experience in the durability design of mechanical engineering structures. He continued his scientific career with appointments as a professor at the University of applied science Jena, the Bauhaus University Weimar and until today at the TUDa. His research work is focused on all aspects of deformation and failure processes with a special attention on the fatigue strength. He published over 70 articles wrote well over 100 technical reports on strength investigations.
