Structural Integrity Assessment of Pressure Vessels by Using the Risk Based Approach

Structural integrity of a cylindrical pressure vessel has been assessed by using the risk based approach in its simplest form. Namely, the risk matrix has been used to illustrate how the water proof test can shift risk from medium to high level, if probability of failure is evaluated by using the failure assessment diagram (FAD). This simple engineering tool shows clearly that water proof testing can be detrimental since it disregards possible stable growth of cracks.
